OEM earphones and headphones?

Here in the Philippines, music lovers, including me, need a high quality earphones or headset to match their audio devices. Decent earphones cost around 1500php to 4000php and high quality earphones/headphones cost above that. A very hefty price but it is a must if you truly love your music.

While checking my Facebook account, I stumbled upon cheap, i mean really cheap, earphones, in-ear monitors(IEM) and headphones. Those deals really caught my eyes! I read the description below the photos and quickly see that they are “OEM”(Original Equipment Manufacturer) i know that OEMs are more common on computer and car parts. I quickly did a research to what is OEM and the keyword that shows up in all the description is re-branded. For example, a JVC CRT televion has a Toshiba screen inside, meaning JVC has bought the Toshiba screen and r- branded it under JVC brand name. Hopefully you get the idea.

Now back to the OEM earphones and headphones, as i said earlier the keyword is re-branded, these earphones and headphones are under Monster’s brand name and it is the Beats by Dr. Dre series. Well that does not fit the description of OEM itself. The sellers of the so-called OEM products rates the audio quality 9 out of 10, i told to myself i must try this out. Luckily I have a friend who already have a Tour Beats by Dr. Dre i quickly borrowed it and plugged it in my audio player. Well i must say that it fits comfortably in my ear but five seconds after the music plays I quickly removed it. The audio really quality is bad for a 990-1000php IEM the sound is muffled it is not music anymore it is more like noise to me. Well that not a good deal after all and if you add a little more of your money you can get a Creative EP-630, which has a very good sound quality for its price.

For me, theses “OEM’s” are just Class A replicas. Sellers just placed “OEM” so more buyers will come in. A scam really.

My tip to all who want those Monster Beats by Dr. Dre is to save up and get the real thing  or add a little more to your money to buy a quality earphones because this so-called OEM’s earphones/headphones will just burn your pocket and ruin your music. And i believe that if you will buy the real thing you will get 6 months or 2 year replacement warranty not really sure about that but still its far better than the 1 week replacement warranty of the “OEM” earphones.

To sum it up: Do not buy OEM’s and invest more if you really want to enjoy your music but if you just want to show off and do not really care about music quality at all then choose “OEM” earphones or headphones.

 Happy Listening!

  2. Even I was wondering what the heck are these OEM headphones/earphones. Thanks a lot for clearing my doubts. I am going to steer clear off them.

  3. Those OEM products in facebook are selling like pancakes out there. The problem is, no one seems to be complaining about the quality. That makes me question the product more; I like my review of items to be as plural as possible (meaning i don't always read all the + points of it).

Really, the prices are overwhelming. Imagine a Sennheiser CX 870 (4,490 PHP) being sold as an OEM for only 1,800 PHP. Almost a damn 40% discount. It looks the same, even with the boxes, manuals and accessories. Even though I already bought a crappy Beats item from them, I'm still enticed to buy again.
